About
The European Space Agency's (ESA) Software and Artificial Intelligence Team, based at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) near Cologne, Germany, is dedicated to advancing human and robotic exploration through cutting-edge technologies like AI, XR, IoT, and Quantum Computing. The XR Lab, a part of this team, focuses on leveraging immersive technologies to revolutionize astronaut training, mission planning, and operations for destinations like the ISS, Lunar Gateway, and beyond.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop Virtual Reality On-Board Training (VR-OBT) scenarios for astronaut training on the ISS.
- Create realistic and interactive environments that simulate aspects of space missions.
- Optimize the software for performance in mobile VR applications.
- Expand the feature set to ensure the training scenarios are engaging and effective.
- Collaborate with the XR Lab team to integrate these training tools into existing systems.
- Analyze and improve current tools and projects developed by the XR Lab.
- Contribute to additional tools or models using Unreal Engine for mixed reality and Unity for augmented reality.
Requirements
- Enrolled in a Master's degree program, preferably in the final or penultimate year, with enrollment maintained throughout the internship.
- Proven experience with Unreal Engine 5 (Blueprints, Materials, UMG, and lighting techniques).
- Experience developing interactive VR or game applications.
- Familiarity with 3D modeling, rendering, and game development processes.
- Knowledge of optimizing 3D models for mobile VR applications.
- Understanding of Unreal Engine performance optimization.
Bonus Points For
- Experience with 3D animations.
- Familiarity with the git/git-lfs version control system.
- Proficiency in an ESA member state language in addition to English or French.

- Duration: Six months preferred.
